Sebumeter
We can design studies to measure the effectiveness of blemish control and acne products using a variety of methodologies, including clinical assessment by expert graders and digital photography to monitor the difference in inflammatory and non-inflammatory lesions pre and post application. Image analysis can be used to determine lesion size, redness and progression over time.
The test site can be the face or back. We would recruit volunteers who present with blemish prone and oily skin.
The instruments we use for acne studies include Mexameter, Colorimeter, Visioscan and Tewameter.
The Mexameter measures erythema and melanin levels in the skin. It gives values on a broad scale (0-999) so even the smallest changes in erythema can be traced.
The Colorimeter can detect small colour changes very close to the skin surface such as pigmented spots and lesions.
The camera on the Visioscan can be used to analyse the roughness and smoothness of the skin surface which can be useful when measuring changes in lesion size. This can also help to prove that a product evens skin texture.
The sebumeter measures the level of sebum on the surface of the skin. It is important for claims support and efficacy testing of cosmetic products, especially those designed for acne and oily skin.
Acne can come in many forms including blackheads, whiteheads, papules, pustules, nodules, and cysts.Acne can appear when hair follicles become filled with dead skin cells and oil. Bacteria is also a catalyst in producing acne. Hormone changes and genetics also play a big role in having acne.
Acne doesn’t just appear on the face; body acne is also very common in people of all different ages. Acne can quite often appear on the back, known as bacne. In the past we have run studies where we’ve tested a product for those who suffer with spotty backs.
Sometimes, those who are blemish-prone may suffer from skin purging. This can occur after using a new product on your skin such as a leave-on exfoliant. Skin purging often looks like small whiteheads or blackheads and tends to clear up quicker than normal breakouts.
