Colorimeter
Skin surface colour changes and texture can be monitored using a range of instruments. The dermatoscope produces high resolution photography of pigmentation and the Visioscan measures skin smoothness and roughness. The colorimeter and Mexameter are used for measurement of skin colour. Using these instruments, we can support claims such as:
The benefits of the colorimeter and Mexameter are that they give a reproducible and accurate measurement of colour, have a quick measurement time, are easy to handle, and are specifically designed for measurements on the skin with its unique reflective and absorption behaviour.
Mexameter
Everyone has a unique skin colour which is made up of different components including melanin and redness. These will vary depending on time of year. Hormones, acne, sun damage and a build up of dead skin cells can lead to uneven skin tone. Sunscreen is essential to ensure uneven skin does not worsen. Dark circles are often inherited and can deepen in colour due to UV exposure.
We regularly run studies which require volunteers to present with dark spots/age/sunspots. These are a very common form of hyperpigmentation and look like small, flat patches on the skin which are brown in colour. They are most often found on those who are over the age of 40 but they can appear earlier. Age spots are caused by an increased production of melanin and often appear after excessive sun exposure, due to the skin producing more melanin.
